The importance of having a pet

Pet Importance Love-MarketExpressOne of the most enriching and delightful experiences in one’s life, in my opinion, is to own a pet. They are a source of abundant joy, happiness and smiles. They fulfil your need for attention and affection in such a way that no human ever could.

The effects of owning a pet can be seen right from childhood. Whether a goldfish, a hamster or a dog – children enjoy the companionship offered by animals. Other than being a source of entertainment, they also offer many developmental benefits. A child’s physical, social, emotional and cognitive development can all be encouraged by interaction with a pet. Children develop a sense of compassion that stays with them throughout their lives.

Most people who have pets enjoy a healthier life than those who don’t. Pet owners, through caring and playing with their pets, end up doing more physical work on a daily basis than those who don’t. In fact a study showed that patients who owned a pet had a much better chance of surviving for more than a year after a heart attack – a difference which could not be explained by the extra exercise the dog owners enjoyed. Pet owners also have strong relationships with their pets which help lower their stress rates and help prevent various types of illness related with these conditions. They lower anxiety and boost immunity. Studies indicate that the mere presence of a pet helps reducing heart beat rate and lowering blood pressure.

The unconditional love that a pet has for you makes you a happier and a more relaxed person. Pets provide companionship and a tranquil environment which promotes a general feeling of well-being. They would want to be with you no matter what you did – good or bad. Pets also facilitate communication According to a study carried out in France, seventy-six percent of the people interviewed believed that the presence of a pet favoured the communication between family members. The pet bonds the family members and therefore is of great importance in homes.

But pets come with a fair amount of responsibility. A pet gives you love, no doubt. But it needs some of your love, time and attention in return as well. Getting a pet is not a decision that one can make hastily that one can make. It needs to be thought through else it will end up in abandonment of the pet which is not only unfair but rather cruel. The responsibility should only be taken when one is ready for it.

“Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.”

The saying sums up pretty much everything any pet owner would want to say. Owning a pet is a blessing. If you don’t own one – I promise you, you are missing out on a lot.

  • I am not a pet lover. I don’t feel that I’ve missed out on anything so I don’t agree on the missing out part but I respect and understand feelings of those who own a pet.
