Following a sting operation, Jindal Steel and Power Ltd (JSPL) and Zee News has filed defamation suits against each other.

JSPL has filed a defamation case against Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd’s Chairman, Managing Director and Founder Subhash Chandra and Chief Executive Officer Puneet Goenka in the Bombay High Court.

The defamation suit has also named Sudhir Chaudhary of Zee News and Sameer Ahluwalia of Zee Business. In a similar manner, Zee News reciprocated and send a 150 crore rupee defamation notice to Jindal Steel and Power Promoter and Chairman Navin Jindal.

Why Defamation Suits?

On October 25, 2012, Mr Naveen Jindal had alleged that the Zee News Group made an extortion demand of 100 crore rupees from him in quid-pro-quo for not airing stories with respect to companies involvement in coal block allocation scam.

JSPL is also named in Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) report on coal blocks allocation. Report states that the company, among others, had got undue benefits from coal block allocations.

CAG report observes that coal blocks were allocated to various companies on nomination basis by the government without following the bidding process, leading to a loss of 1,85,000 (One Lakh Eighty Five thousand) crore rupees to taxpayers.

The case is expected to come up for hearing next week, It remains to bee seen that who blinks first?
