Walking into an Apple store to look at the 2 options I had in mind (Macbook Pro 13 and 15 inch), I could not resist looking at the new Macbook. The Air never got my attention for a couple of reasons. One is if you’re going thin, it might as well be MacBook thin. Two is and this may be an unfair reason – but I loved the colors offered on the Macbook. The Macbook is a definite attention seeker with an unfathomable structure that only the Gods can create in a laptop. How on earth did they do it?
The Look
The sleek design of this laptop is highly seductive. If you are a Mac family, you have to have one. To have created the Macbook from scratch must have taken a lot of guts and it is exactly what Apple is known for. There is absolutely nothing ugly about this laptop. Nothing out of place. Everything is as it should be. It looks super fragile yet feels very sturdy when holding it in your hands.
Performance
The Macbook comes in 2 models. Both models are equipped with a Retina display, a 12 inch LED- backlit display with a resolution of 2304 by 1440. The basic model has a 1.1 GHz dual-core Intel Core M processor (Turbo Boost up to 2.4 GHz). The upgraded model comes with a 1.2 GHz dual-core Intel Core M processor (Turbo Boost up to 2.6 GHz) and both models are configurable to 1.3 GHz processors with a turbo boost of 2.9GHz. What this means to you and me is that the laptop is good for regular computer work such as browsing the internet, checking mail, social media and a ton of video consumption by way of Youtube and Netflix. And that there may be minor lags barely noticeable unless you are into heavy stuff like gaming or video editing or you are really into nitpicking. That said, the performance is great for home use and for students with their presentations and assignment reports.
Keyboard & Trackpad
One of the most talked about things of the Macbook is the Keyboard. I had no hopes for this keyboard when I used it for the very first time. It felt flat. Typing was a bit cumbersome as my fingers typed more from memory rather than by looking at the keyboard and to be able to do that effortlessly on the new design was a bit of a momentary challenge. By the end of the day, I was in love. If I were to choose between the Macbook pro and the Macbook, I would say the Macbook Pro’s keyboard is far better. But then the design on the Macbook is so sleek, it would be almost impossible to give the user the same level of comfort whilst maintaining the thinness of it.
The trackpad is good and very responsive. I am guessing you will notice the sluggishness in performance when you work on intensive stuff. With regular browsing habits, you are rarely if not ever, going to see the computer as a unit get sluggish.
Audio
I was more shocked than surprised at how awesome the speakers are on the Macbook. They are way better than the Macbook Pro and the Air. The speakers on the Macbook are just above the keyboard and can pack quite a punch. The sound on this little thing can get so loud you will rarely ever feel the need to use higher volumes.
The Flaw
Ports. There are absolutely no ports except for the USB C type port. If you need to use to connect your other devices, you would need an adapter. Even though they are available, it is just one more thing to buy and one more thing to store which beats the minimal design in a way. This may not even be a flaw to some who don’t necessarily need USB ports with the ability to move files using bluetooth or with so many other options we have these days.
