What makes Tamil Nadu so distinctive and sets it apart from other states, making it an outlier?
The language, and the willingness to stay true to its roots and preserve the individuality and customs of its great ancestors, make Tamil Nadu unique. While this can hold true for an eternity, but as of today, a different challenge faces the people and the state government.
The Regional Parties in Tamil Nadu, DMK, AIADMK, DMDK, NTK and VCK, are fighting their own battles to survive in the unforgiving terrain of politics. Yet the national parties are knocking on the door to find some room for themselves, as there has been a void in the principal opposition parties in Tamil Nadu. Scope of error is so minimal for any ruling party, it cannot fight battles in the old ways, it has to reinvent itself every week with the simple mantra of delivering exemplary governance. The expectation can be excruciatingly painful. They should leverage the powerful Pareto principle to enhance governance. By focusing on key priorities, empowering allies, immersing themselves to good governance processes development, social equality, and justice, they can cut through distractions and drive meaningful change.
The first step is to identify key issues and prioritize problems. Governments can identify the 20% of issues that cause 80% of the problems, such as corruption or infrastructure deficits.
In this series, we will be focusing on the topmost priority of this time: Generating Jobs in Tamil Nadu. While corruption is an evergreen subject, we can also focus on other issues that can indirectly reduce corruption. By addressing these underlying priorities, we can create a multi-pronged approach to combat corruption along the way
Generating Jobs:
One such pressing issue is how to generate jobs or keep the people employed through various means. The various means could be a combination of direct and indirect approaches.
Every district in the state has a natural advantage or disadvantage. Either way, take them into consideration and build a job generation model based on that. One such district is Coimbatore, known across India as the industrial hub of Tamil Nadu. While Coimbatore is known as the cotton city and plays a vital role in Tamil Nadu’s textile businesses, TN accounts for 45% of the spinning capacity and 10% of the handloom capacity. In this area the state government is offering policy incentives to be competitive compared to other states. While it’s good to strengthen existing sectors, the government should also focus on diversifying the industrial base by promoting sectors like Engineering, Auto Components, Pump Manufacturing, and Kitchen appliance. We are taking one sector at a time.
Focusing on the kitchen appliance market. The Indian mixer, juicer, and grinder market size would be valued around US$ 3.2 billion in 2025 with a CAGR of 9.16%. There is enough potential to be a force and build an ecosystem to innovate and excel in this area of kitchen appliances. Any incentives and policy can be formulated but ecosystem creation is the key beyond the current advantage.
- Tap into educational institutions in and around the district and explore collaborations to set up a smart and agile micro center for the design and development of innovative kitchen appliances.
- Promote Smart Manufacturing and nurture small businesses and entrepreneurs to create global leaders in this field. Implement the path to integrate Industry 4.0 framework in a way that it can be affordable to startups also.
- Develop new digital-enabled supply chain logistics to ensure a reliable and cost-effective supply of raw materials and components, leveraging the unique natural resource advantages of each district.
This all can be done in the Micro Design & Innovation centers – MDIC, where entrepreneurs and small businesses can avail this facility and talent pool at a very affordable cost.
Suppose an entrepreneur, whether a young engineer or someone with limited educational background or experience, has a core idea for a BLDC motor-based mixer product. The first step is to develop the MVP. The MIDC in any engineering colleges can be approached and can play a crucial role in nurturing this entrepreneurial aspiration and shaping the MVP. They can provide the necessary research facilities, technical expertise, and a supportive environment. All this usage can come at a minimal cost, along with a minor equity stake in the startup for the MIDC.It would be a win-win situation for all and pave the way for creating manufacturing coworking space centers along with MIDCs.
While they are focusing on key priorities, they should also spread awareness about the policy implementation, its benefits, and how to avail of it. Alongside this, the imperative need of the hour is to debunk false narratives and combat the spread of fake news.
Strict policies should be developed to create a system that fosters healthy discussions and debates grounded in facts and figures. Without addressing the spread of misinformation, you are inadvertently empowering those who aim to manipulate public opinion through sensationalism and distraction.
A society that debates aggressively based on facts and figures, rather than rhetorical political agendas, will always thrive and survive the test of time. Ultimately, good governance can be summarized as a timely benefit.
“A timely benefit, -though thing of little worth,
The gift itself, -in excellence transcends the earth”
