The evolution of trends in the fashion industry has taken a big jump from the 90s pop culture to the noughties dramatic culture.

fashion-industry-marketexpress-inWhether it is Bollywood or Hollywood, the change is big and huge but that doesn’t mean that we are leaving our history behind. People still dress up the way they want. While looking at your grandparents haven’t you wondered what sort of clothes they wore, what kind of fashion they followed? Well, that’s what we are gonna talk about, “THE EVOLUTION OF FASHION”.

India has a very rich and varied textile heritage. Each region of India has very unique traditional costumes, accessories, cosmetics etc. The fashion of India is not only confined within the limits of the country but also a perfect touch of western culture in many developed and underdeveloped countries can also be seen. For example, we have seen that the American women wore our Indian saree and accessories during Navratri, and all this has been done by the Indian film industry- BOLLYWOOD.

During the 90s, the most common look was a traditional look which consists of sarees, Kurtis, patialas, salwar etc., but when we talk about the western look during the 90s of women, it was, high waisted wide trousers paired with collar shirts, long skirts which obviously now it has become short skirts. Nowadays, it’s short jeans, crop tops, jumpsuits, suits etc. While we talk about the fashion of men during the 90s it consists of skinny jeans which didn’t last much longer and was soon replaced by baggy jeans. By 2005-06, skinny jeans were quite popular again, the belt was always seen around the waist, buttoned shirts, maybe a short scarf around the neck of few could be seen, boots etc.

Nowadays, it’s ripped jeans, formals, T-shirts or customized T-shirts, printed shirts, sneakers etc. Bollywood was full of adventure and experiments and that’s how fashion has evolved. We all know the movie, “Dil Toh Pagal Hain” starring Karisma Kapoor. Everyone wanted to look like Karisma Kapoor. All of her outfits, which were heavily sportswear-inspired looked effortless and cool, it was now accepted to wear these trendy outfits to college or look sexy for the gym. And let’s not forget that epic dance-off between Karisma and Madhuri Dixit-Nene. This style has made its return with more relaxed silhouettes and matching sets for every day. Even bicycle shorts have made their way back into fashion. More often than not you’ll see influencers on Instagram rocking these trends on a daily basis.

You couldn’t have survived the 90s without wearing some type of choker at least once. But what was popularized by many Bollywood heroines was more feminine pearl detailed chokers, some chunky and some delicate. One of these versions was worn by “Madhuri” in ‘Hum Aapke Hain Kaun,’ paired with matching earrings and a cute pink dress, she looked sweet like candy. For 2020, more extravagant chokers are in style and popping up on the runways. The current theme is, “go big or go home”.

How can we forget Kareena Kapoor Khan of Bebo from “Jab we met”, her outfits have inspired many girls to wear the same, few of them were, Harem and Patiala Pants with long tops, the boho look, the corset top and red skirt look gaining a lot of attention from the public.

We all know that Hollywood is never a step back when coming to looking good and fashionable. Hollywood has an ever-inspiring history of glory and richness. It is said that “If you’re not rich, look rich” and that can only be changed through a change of fashion. Popular mid-’90s looks for women included tailored skirts and pantsuits, slip dresses, hot pants, and skirts in satin and vinyl fabrics. Animal prints and bright colors were popular carryovers from the early 1990s. Nowadays, it includes mid- lengthed skirts, off shoulder tops, hoodies, sweatshirts etc.

While coming to the men during the 90s, they wore basic white T-shirts, waistcoats, flannel shirts etc. Nowadays, ripped jeans, oversized outerwear, boxy puffer jackets etc. The decade of 1920s and 1930s marked the initial period of American fashion recognition. Americans and the rest of the world saw the most recent ideals of beauty and glamor. Exciting dresses and new fashions worn by Hollywood stars mesmerized millions of people around the world. During and after World War2 the American culture design industry flourished. Designers, trained in Paris, promoted purely American styles featuring simplicity, practicality and casualty, prefered by American women. The creation of American ‘top-of-the-line-couture’ presented a serious rivalry to French fashion designs and products.

However, the recognition of many outfits by the public changed the fashion among them. The actresses like Jennifer Aniston from “Friends”. The outfit may be totally out of style now, but in the 1990s millions of American women wanted “The Rachel.” 1994: Princess Diana’s revenge dress. It’s pretty hard to top the stunning white gown that Princess Diana wore to her wedding with Prince Charles, but it’s the little black that she wore shortly after their divorce that really turned heads. Now known as the “Revenge Dress”, Diana wore the gown to a Vanity Fair party in 1994 right around the same time that Charles would admit to an affair with Camilla Parker Bowles, his now-wife.

Therefore, we conclude that the trend of fashion is constantly changing day by day, the first scarf was worn around the neck, later as a band on the head and now it’s worn as a cute crop top designed by us only. Hence we could say that with a rapid change in the fashion industry, the tastes and preferences have also changed. In other countries, the schools and colleges dress up like 90s pop culture, 90s music, everything that connects them to their history once in a year. So, with a rapid change too, we need to stick with our memorable past of our parents or our grandparents. Fashion is just a piece of clothing, it depends on how we want to style it.
